Color Gamut
Enhancing Visual Quality
What is Color Gamut?

A color gamut defines a specific range of colors that a device can reproduce, which is a subset of the colors identifiable by the human eye within the visible spectrum. Different devices such as digital cameras, scanners, monitors, and printers have varying capabilities in reproducing colors. The color gamut helps in making these differences clear and in reconciling the colors that can be used in common between devices.

Expressing Color Gamut

The most common method used for expressing the color gamut of display products is the xy chromaticity diagram of the XYZ color system, established by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). This diagram represents the colors of the visible spectrum using numerical figures and graphs them as color coordinates. In the xy chromaticity diagram, the range of colors visible to the human eye is indicated by an area shaped like an upside-down “U” surrounded by dotted lines.

Various standards govern color gamuts, with sRGB, Adobe RGB, and NTSC being the most frequently cited for personal computers. These standards are depicted as triangles on the xy chromaticity diagram, showing the peak RGB coordinates connected by straight lines. A larger triangle area indicates a standard capable of displaying more colors.

Color Gamut Standards
sRGB

The international standard for personal computers, established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 1998. sRGB is widely used in Windows environments and is supported by most LCD monitors, printers, digital cameras, and various applications to ensure color consistency between input and output devices.

Adobe RGB

Defined by Adobe Systems in 1998, this standard offers a broader color range than sRGB, particularly in the green domain. It is widely used in professional color imaging environments and the print and publishing industries.

NTSC

The standard for analog television, developed by the National Television Standards Committee of the United States. It has a color range close to Adobe RGB but with slightly different R and B values.

Enhancing Color Gamut with Backlight Technology

Improvements in backlight technology have significantly expanded the color gamuts of LCD monitors. The two major approaches include enhancing cold cathode backlights and using RGB LED backlights.

Cold Cathode Backlights

Modifying the phosphors of cold cathode backlights has expanded the color gamut without major changes to the existing structure, making it cost-effective.

RGB LED Backlights

These backlights achieve higher levels of luminance and color purity, although they come with challenges like lower color stability and difficulty in achieving uniform white color. Despite the higher cost, the number of LCD monitors incorporating RGB LED backlights is increasing due to their effectiveness in expanding color gamuts.

Understanding and utilizing color gamut is essential for delivering vibrant, true-to-life visuals across our various displays while providing cost-effective solutions. Our products, designed with wide color gamuts, ensure your content is presented with the vibrancy and accuracy it deserves, enhancing the overall viewer experience in any environment. Whether it’s high brightness and durability, or vibrant visuals, or all of the above, our displays are engineered to meet our clients’ requirements and exceed with exceptional results and value.
